As a Reiki Master, I work with the chakras when doing a Reiki session. Each of our bodies has seven chakras down the middle of it, and each one pertains to different areas of our body, mentality, emotions and spirituality. They are each a spinning wheel of energy. In Reiki, I work to balance and unclog the chakras. This helps release stress and heal the body of past and current issues that we carry around with us.

Because I work with chakras, I decided to read a book all about them called “Wheels of Life.” This book defines chakras as organizing centers for the reception, assimilation and transmission of life energies.

In this book, I came across a section about meditation, and I loved what it had to say about it! Here is my favorite paragraph:

We take it for granted that we need to take showers, clean our houses, and wash our clothes. We’d be uncomfortable if we didn’t, to say nothing of being the object of social criticism. Yet, the mind and its thoughts need cleansing, perhaps even more than our bodies. The mind works longer, encounters wider dimensions, and runs the operating system of our life as well! While few of us would consider eating dinner on yesterday’s dirty dishes, we think nothing of tackling a new problem with yesterday’s cluttered mind. No wonder we feel tired, confused and ignorant!

The word meditation gets thrown around quite a bit these days, and I feel like it confuses some people enough to ignore it. This paragraph does a great job explaining why meditation is so important in the modern world. It’s not some far-off Buddhist philosophy that is impossible to succeed at unless you spend hours on it in a quiet, secluded place. You can look at it as a way to clear your mind of the endless chatter.

When I do Reiki sessions, almost every time I’m sending Reiki energy to someone’s head, the energy coming from their head is extremely chaotic. This is because of the thoughts that never stop rambling. I have the same problem, trust me! Most people do. But this is why meditation is so important. We would all be so much healthier, more focused, more energized, happier and more relaxed if we would just shut those thoughts off for a while.

There are tons of ways to meditate. Yoga is a form of meditation. (This probably isn’t true for the yoga you do at the gym that incorporates pushups and no rhyme or reason to your breathing, however.) You could sit quietly in any position and just internally repeat a mantra over and over again. It doesn’t have to be in Sanskrit, either. (This is popular in meditation practices.) You can decide on a sentence that is meaningful to you and just keep repeating it. My favorite is “I’m health and my body is perfect.”

You can sit quietly and focus on your breathing, making sure to take deep, long breaths in and out. You can recite Om’s or Aum’s. You can close your eyes and focus on sounds around you. Or you can close your eyes and focus on nothing, sending thoughts away each time they pop up.

Taking time out of your day to sit and literally do nothing, and think nothing, has incredible advantages to it. Not only is it good for physical health, but also mental, emotional and spiritual health. What it does spiritually is a whole other subject. When you’re ready for it, you can work on the spiritual realm of your life, which affects every other aspect of your life simultaneously.

If you feel like you need help with meditation, contact me to sign up for a Reiki session! People tell me all the time that because they feel so relaxed during a session, it becomes much easier to turn off the brain. It’s almost like forced meditation.

Find a way to meditate that works for you. After doing it for some time, like me, you will forget what life was like without it. Namaste!
